Music At Knox
Knox endeavors to blend traditional and contemporary musical forms. Most Sundays you’ll hear a traditional pipe organ on some hymns, and other songs accompanied by a full band with guitars, mandolin, piano and percussion. Some Sundays you’ll hear a violin solo, other Sundays a duet or an a cappella anthem, and still other times a bluegrass motif.
We are thankful for the leadership of our organist, Hye Jung Shin, who is a graduate student at USC. In addition to leading congregational hymns on the organ, Hye Jung is an accomplished pianist who is well versed in classical and contemporary styles. She often plays with the band from the piano or keyboard, and blesses the congregation with beautiful offertories and special music in which the piano supports a violin or vocal soloist.
Heather Thomsen, a graduate student at Fuller Seminary, leads the Knox Band. Heather has a deep love for the profound ways God's character, salvation history, and Christian devotion are expressed in the great hymns of the faith. One of her goals as a music leader is to infuse these rich texts with the musical energy and passion of contemporary Christian music. Heather plays guitar, mandolin, and a bit of piano.
The diversity of music at Knox reflects the diversity of our church's leadership. But more important than musical styles and selections is our desire to worship the triune God with heart, soul, mind and strength, with creativity and passion, with thoughtfulness and sensitivity.
Volunteers Wanted!
The Knox Band consists of a generous and talented group of volunteers who give their time to lead music each Sunday on a rotating, scheduled basis. We are delighted to include creative instrumentation, as any given Sunday will feature music from acoustic and electric guitars, piano, keyboard, mandolin, banjo, violin, saxophone, brass instruments, accordion, bass, and hand drums such as djembe and cajon. If you are interested in participating in the Knox Band as a musician, vocalist, or sound tech, please email Heather. Please include your name, instrument(s), church background, and music experience.
